“Stay gold” is a reference to the Robert Frost poem that Ponyboy recites to Johnny when the two hide out in the Windrixville Church. By the end of the novel, the boys apply this idea to youthful innocence, believing that they cannot remain forever unsullied by the harsh realities of life. Here, Johnny urges Ponyboy to remain gold, or innocent.
It has modern themes and typical teenage issues that people around the world have experienced. There are very few cultural notes in this, which means you don’t need much background information. Sodapop falls asleep and leaves Ponyboy awake to wonder. Darry and Sodapop come to get Ponyboy, and Darry and Ponyboy make up. The following morning, the newspapers proclaim Ponyboy and Johnny heroes.
Johnny is adamant and points out that his own parents would not care what happens to him, but Ponyboy’s brothers care about him and want to see him. Swearing under his breath, Dally begins to drive Johnny and Ponyboy home. As they drive past the church where Ponyboy and Johnny have been staying, they see that it is on fire. Ponyboy thinks he and Johnny must have started the fire with a cigarette butt, so the boys jump out of the car to examine the blaze. Teachers often explain that fair is a four-letter word, and they discourage its use in their classrooms.

He asks her if she can see the sunset on the West Side, and when she says she can, he tells her to remember that he can see it on the East Side too. Two-Bit and Ponyboy go to see Johnny and Dally in the hospital. Johnny, weak and pale, whispers that he would like Ponyboy to finish reading Gone with the Wind to him. His mother shows up to visit, but she is a mean-spirited, nagging woman and Johnny refuses to see her. As Ponyboy and Two-Bit leave, she accosts them and blames them for Johnny’s condition, and Two-Bit insults her.
Dally drives them back to the church, only to see it has caught fire. The back of Pony's brown leather jacket catches fire, and Dally hits him hard enough to put out the fire, but unintentionally knocks him unconscious. The Curtis brothers' parents are dead, so eldest brother Darrel ("Darry") is left to raise and support his two younger brothers, Ponyboy and Sodapop ("Soda"), in 1965 Tulsa, Oklahoma. Some socially affluent teens harass and assault Ponyboy until some of his fellow greasers chase them off. The next night, he, Johnny and Dallas catch a movie at the local drive-in, where Dallas flirts with "Soc" Cherry Valance.
Chapter 9
At the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy's hair is long and dark, but is cut short and bleached blond while he and Johnny are on the run. He is described as good-looking and resemblant of Sodapop by several characters, though he disagrees. In the film, Ponyboy's appearance is faithful to his novel appearance, with the minor exception of his hair, which is darker than it is described as being in the book.
His participation in the rumble cements his place in the gang; he is no longer a tagalong little brother but rather a fighter in his own right. The 1983 film based on the 1967 book is a faithful adaptation overall, but as with most movie versions, there is still more in the book that the movie had to leave out. The Outsidersfrom Francis Ford Coppola certainly achieves the same feeling as the book as the cast captures each of the characters they're portraying successfully. The Outsiders was a controversial book at the time of its publication; it is still currently challenged and debated. It was ranked #38 on the American Library Association’s Top 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990–1999.
Ponyboy feels reassured by his talk with Randy and realizes that Socs can be human and vulnerable. The next morning, Ponyboy is making breakfast when Steve Randle (Sodapop’s best friend) and Two-Bit come in with the morning papers. The papers portray Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally as heroes for rescuing the schoolchildren. They also mention Ponyboy’s excellent performance on the track team and in school. The papers mention that the state will charge Johnny with manslaughter and send both Ponyboy and Johnny to juvenile court, from which Ponyboy might be sent to a boys’ home.

Darry slaps Ponyboy due to late arrival then, he runs off to Johnny. Drunk Soc, Bob, and Johnny meet again when Bob threatens Johnny then a little clash starts among them. Then, Johnny and Ponyboy inform Dally about their shelter in state's old church. There was a massive conflict going on in the Church. Johnny died in the Hospital as he saved children trapped in it.
Coppola read the book and the letter and was so moved, he made this movie and Rumble Fish . Coppola threw out Kathleen Rowell's script, wrote his own, and filmed the new screenplay. However, due to a decision by the Writers Guild, Coppola was unable to secure a credit for himself. The Outsiders House Museum opened in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on August 9, 2019. In 2009, hip-hop artist Danny Boy O'Connor discovered the house that was used for the Curtis Brothers's home. Moving forward, O'Connor kept the thought of buying it, which he eventually did in 2016.
